Categories for The Publishing Prize 2017

 

If you think your film, print publication or website fits two or more of these categories, choose the one that you think applies best. Each specific entry can compete in one category only. We perform category checks throughout the entry period, and if your entry is moved to a different category, we’ll let you know.

 

FILM CATEGORIES (including online video, etc)

The maximum length of a film entered for The Publishing Prize used to be 8 minutes, but that time limit was removed on April 26th.

• Films for information

films the main purpose of which is to advise or inform, for example about a product, a service or an activity

• Instructional films

films the main purpose of which is to provide knowledge and/or skills

• Marketing films

films the main purpose of which is to influence, generate debate or awaken interest, for example in a product, service or activity

 

PRINT CATEGORIES

For a product to qualify as newspaper or magazine, we require that at least two issues per year are published. See also one-off magazines. 

• Annual reports – companies

annual reports from commercial companies – private or public sector – which are not listed at a stock exchange

• Annual reports – organizations/public sector

annual reports from organizations, authorities, municipalities etc. Please note that annual reports from commercial companies owned by the public sector belong in the category Annual reports – companies

• Annual reports – publicly listed companies

annual reports from companies that are listed at a stock exchange

• Coffee table books

books of exceptional quality, generally large in size and with large pictures

• Community magazines

publications distributed free to all households in an area. Published by a region, a city, a municipality, a religious body or a private publisher

• Cultural season programs

booklets with programs for theaters, concert halls, festivals etc

• Customer magazines

magazines distributed free of charge to customers and potential customers. See also Organizational magazines

• Educational books/booklets

books or booklets intended for use in teaching or self-study. Text-only print cannot compete

• Educational syllabus information

brochures or booklets describing a university, school etc and giving details of its courses

• Employee magazines

magazines published mainly for the people who work for a company, organization etc. See also Organizational magazines

• Illustrated non-fiction

illustrated books which don’t primarily fit into any of our other categories. Books of photography, cookery books, handbooks etc belong in this category. See also Coffee table books

• Informational print – general

folders, booklets or leaflets the main purpose of which is to give information about products, services, activities etc; and which do not primarily belong to any other category

• Magazines

periodical publications that do not primarily belong to any of the other magazine categories

• Marketing materials – print

leaflets, folders or booklets the main purpose of which is to influence, generate debate or awaken interest in potential customers, for example about a product, a service or an activity, and which do not primarily belong to any other category

• Membership magazines

magazines published mainly for the members of an association, organization etc

• Newspaper supplements

supplements packaged with daily or weekly newspapers and the like, either with primarily editorial content or newspaper-like advertising pullouts

• One-off magazines

one shot magazines, publications in the form of a magazine, which are produced one time only – or, if more than once, limited to no more than one issue per year

• Organizational magazines

periodical publications in magazine-like format which present information about an organization’s activities, distributed to most of the following audiences: the work force, customers, decision makers and politicians, journalists and other opinion leaders

• Product catalogues

booklets or books with detailed descriptions of an assortment of products, services etc., presented in a structured way

• Reports

printed publications which explain, often in some detail, the operation and results of a project, assignment or research investigation; and which do not primarily belong to any other category. Text-only reports cannot compete

• Sustainability reports

publications which report on an organisation’s performance, for example in environmental, social and ethical responsibility, or economic performance

• Tourism and travel guides

printed material the main purpose of which is to describe the features of a country, region or town, or any kind of visitor attraction, for potential or actual visitors. Examples: general tourist guides, museum guides, guides to where to eat and what to see in a city

 

WEBSITE CATEGORIES

This section of the contest is for websites only – not for apps, Facebook pages or publications in PDF format.

• Annual reports and related reports – web

this category is for a website – or some clearly defined part of a website – which presents an organization’s annual report, sustainability or social responsibility report, in web page form (that is, not as PDF only). The organization may be a company, a branch of national or local government or other authority, a charity or other NGO, etc

• Information sites

websites which have as their main purpose the presentation of information on any topic, including about products, activities and services, or fields of knowledge. Sites entered under this heading should not primarily belong to any of the other website categories

• Marketing sites and campaign sites

websites the main purpose of which is to influence, generate debate or awaken interest, for example in a product, service or activity (e-commerce sites belong in this category), and which do not primarily belong to any other category. Since campaign sites usually are open for a limited period of time only, we remind you here of the contest rule that a site entered into the contest must be open to the public until the end of the year

• Membership sites

websites which are mainly for the members of an association, organization etc

• Non governmental organization sites (NGO)

websites published by not-for-profit or commercial organizations that are independent from national government and intergovernmental organizations

• Online magazines and newspapers

websites – not PDFs – which contain editorial material such as news items, articles and interviews, reviews, commentary and so on
